About Larrybird
I am a Harlequin Macaw hybrid: a cross between a Blue and Gold Macaw and a
Greenwing Macaw.
I am not named for the basketball player but for one of the Three Stooges. In my first
home I lived with a cat and dog named Curly and Moe. I hatched about nine years ago.
I have had four different owners. They all had one thing in common, they really loved me
a lot (a whole lot). Of course, I am very loveable and well-behaved too. I want you to
know that I am the best-behaved bird here. For instance, if you were to invite me over to
your house, I would not use my beak to chew up a single thing. Leslie taught me most of
what I know (She owned a bar in town called the Bamboo Room). You could call me a
"Barbird". I know all about bartending. I grew up in Leslie's Bamboo Room, and later she
and I moved to Big Pine Key, and I became the mascot at Mangrove Mama's while she
tended bar there.
I love maraschino cherries, cranberry juice, unsalted potato chips, banana chips and
raisin bread. I say "Hello", "Hello, Larry", "Larrybird", "What's up Larry?" "What's with
that?" and "Cracker". I do the pretty girl whistle, and I'd love for you to whistle to me
"Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf".
My third owner was Betsy. She was very kind and sensitive to my needs. We had just
started having a great time when she had a serious bout of bad health and had to focus
all her attention on getting well. So that is how I became part of the Mana Project.
Being a Harlequin Macaw, means I am not a true species bird. Humans invented me by
crossing a blue and gold Macaw like Ara Ara and a Greenwing Macaw like Hammerhead.
