About Ara Ara
I am a blue and gold Macaw parrot

Ara Ara is an abbreviation of my scientific name Ara Ararauna. It is a South American
Indian term which means …. bird god. Nancy also nicknamed me "the blue bird of
happiness", probably because I was the first bird here and because my behavior is
challenging.

In case you did not notice, I am the gatekeeper. I verbally assault everyone who steps
inside the garden with a loud and confrontive hello! Please notice my attitude (I work at
it), my studied tone of voice, my ruffled head feathers and my dominating aggressive
manner. I fool some people into thinking I am sweet, friendly and touchable, however I
am the garden’s greatest masterpiece of "pecking order" disobedience and you will be
disobedient too if you touch me or hold my foot when I frantically reach for your hand. I
bite! And so do all the rest of the birds here! Please do not touch me!

While you are marveling at my beautiful colors, observe me observing you. I see color
very well. Do not be surprised if I study your attire and I look you up and down for quite
awhile to see what colors you are wearing. I am especially interested in shoe design. My
English repertoire is growing I say "good morning", "hello", "good bye", "bye bye", "I love
Steph", "hugs and kisses", "baa baa black sheep", and" pretty birdie". I sing opera, baa
like a sheep, and I role my "r’s" like a good Brazilian should.

I love attention and I am an incessant showoff. My greatest desire is to have a bird
trainer who could teach me new tricks so I can entertain you. I should have been born
into the circus life, because I never get tired of performing for you. I taught myself to do
a sort of upside down trick, I dance (side to side) with or without music, and I spread my
wings like an eagle, when asked to do so, but please do not ask me to flap my wings
while I am in this cage because it is too small and I might hurt myself.

Nancy has books and videos on parrot training and wants to teach me new tricks, when
she has more time. She asked me to ask you to donate money towards hiring a part
time person to help with bird maintenance. She needs a minimum of three hours of help
daily, then she could spend more time with me and the other birds, could take us for
walks, could give me the fun water baths I enjoy so much, especially with all the other
birds in the sun circle, and last but not least she could help me learn new tricks and fun
games to share with you.
